WESTON, Conn. Westons girls track and field team took second while the boys finished sixth in the Class M state championships Tuesday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.
Emily Savage won the pole vault, took second in the long jump and was tied for third in the high jump to lead Westons girls, who finished tied for second with Career Magnet with 38 points. Hillhouse won with 124 points. Westons boys had 27 points and Hillhouse won with 47.
I knew we had a chance to take runner up to Hillhouse and I thought the girls did a great job all season training to put themselves in that position, Weston coach Matt Medve said. We had a variety of injuries and setbacks with both the boys and the girls team all year and their determination to succeed brought them to this title. I am very proud of how they ended the season.
Savage won the high jump with a leap of 10-feet, 7-inches. Teammate Andrea Janis took fourth and Tess Fagan took sixth. In the long jump, Savage sailed 16 feet, 6 ½ inches, and she cleared 4 feet, 10 inches in the high jump for a three-way tie for third.
Savages big night came on the heels of a strong meet at the South-West Conference championships, when she won two events and took second in another. Emily is one of the best athletes in the area and she deserves a lot of the credit for the teams success, Medve said. Every season she improves upon herself and helps others get better as she is training as well.
Whitney Farber who was fifth in the 300 for Weston, which also had several strong showings in relays. The 4 x 200 team of Hannah Goodman, Sydney Allon, Amanda Matluck and Farber grabbed second. The sprint medley finished sixth with Goodman, Allon, Matluck and Nina Low.
For Westons boys, Jensen Frost finished sixth in the 600 and David Stankiewicz was sixth in the 1,000. William Glaser finished seventh in the 1,600, and the 4 x 200 team of Bryan Lonergan, Frost, Simeon Okoro and Jonathan Savicky also finished seventh.
Weston took second in the 4 x 400 with Okoro, Frost, Savicky and Stankiewicz. The 4 x 800 relay took third with Cole Clark, Jack Curran, Matthew Bolin and Noah Krassin. The sprint medley of Lonergan, Okoro, Savicky and Krassin also took third.
In the pole vault, sophomore Nicholas DiBartholomeo took fourth.
Weston will compete in the State Open on Saturday in New Haven. Complete results of the Class M meet are available online.
