WESTON, Conn. The Weston High girls basketball team finally picked up its first win of the season on Tuesday. But the Trojans had to survive a huge Wilton comeback and a wacky final eight seconds to hold on for a 57-53 victory.
We just started getting a little jittery. We just said we have to maintain composure and stay calm, Westons Ellie Martin said. We regrouped and battled and got the win.
Weston could taste its first victory of the year, leading Wilton 50-38 with 5:24 to play. The Warriors would not go quietly, however, as Maddy Fulton led the Wilton comeback with 10 fourth-quarter points. Fulton tied the game at 53-53 with 1:55 to play.
The Trojans finally got a little luck on their side in the closing seconds. After Wilton turned the ball over on three straight possessions, Martin beat the Warriors full-court press, finding a wide-open Anna Mahony. The tall center netted the layup to put Weston up for good.
Weston still had to survive one last Wilton attack, as the Warriors Casey Pearsall knocked two straight inbounds passes back out. On the third attempt, Morgan Moubayed stepped on the out-of-bounds line in the chaotic confusion, turning the ball back over to Wilton.
On the ensuing Wilton inbounds pass with eight seconds remaining, Pearsall lost track of where she was on the court and stepped into the backcourt. The ball turned back over to Weston and the Trojans finally picked a win.
We needed to win this game. We really kept our intensity up throughout and didnt let up, Mahony said. This definitely gives us a lot of confidence and we can only go up from here.
Martin had a huge night for the Trojans, knocking down a game-high 23 points. Mahony was a stone wall on defense and added nine points on offense. Weston also benefited from Wilton foul trouble, going 15-for-23 from the line.
Weston (1-4) will host Granby Memorial on Thursday at 7 p.m.
