Weston Baseball Flattens Barlow, 12-1

WESTON, Conn. – The Weston High baseball team made mincemeat of Joel Barlow High School, 12-1, in a game Wednesday that solidified the Trojans' post-season prospects.

Based on the Trojans' final regular season game against Bethel on Thursday, Weston could secure a first round home game in the South-West Conference tournament next Monday and one or possibly two home games in the state championships, according to Trojans coach Frank Fedeli.

“The kids are coming around at the right time, the bats are picking up,” Fedeli said. “There are teams that are just as good or better than us so we can’t let down in the tournaments.”

The win over Barlow upped Weston’s record to 13-6 and dropped Barlow to 6-12.

Fedeli praised his batters, who recorded 15 hits against Barlow, but his starting pitcher was the star. Junior Charles Ameer upped his record to 7-1, allowed only two hits and one walk and struck out eight. He pitched five shutout innings until Barlow scored a single unearned run in the sixth. Ameer was on a pitch count and didn’t finish the game.

“I pitched to contact and used the defense,” he said. “I struggled in the last inning but pitched well today.”

Ameer won’t pitch Thursday but is scheduled to start the first playoff game Monday.

Jim Sanzone led the Trojan hitting attack, going three for three with five RBIs.

Barlow starting pitcher senior Chris Booton lasted three innings, giving up six runs. Four pitchers followed, each going an inning. Only senior Corey Stirling could hold the Trojans scoreless. Stirling also doubled off Ameer, the only extra base hit he allowed.
