Jo Rasmussen and Leela Narang have built a friendly rivalry, facing each other for a fourth year in a row in the finals of the Longshore Women's Golf Association Club Championship. After trading the lead the entire day, it was clear the first golfer to take advantage of a mistake would come out on top. Narang hit her tee shot on 18 out of bounds, and Rasmussen capitalized, sealing a 1-up victory.
"Leela is a very good golfer," Rasmussen said. "It's always she and I in the championship. Anybody could have won."
Rasmussen's statement was not an exaggeration. Neither woman had the lead for more than two holes in a row and the lead was never more than 1-up during the entire final round. Narang held a 1-up lead after the front nine and traded back and forth with Rasmussen until retaking the lead on 16. Rasmussen came up with a clutch par on 17 to make the match even, setting up the winner-take-all 18th hole.
"It was so exciting, and it was hard work," Rasmussen said. "She and I are always slugging it out, but we like each other very much and we respect each other. I just got lucky." Rasmussen owns Fitness Works in Westport.
Patty Kondub came out victorious in the first flight, for players with a handicap over 10. She defeated Lanie Horelik 2-up. Barbara Downey won the second flight over Jean Murdoch, 2-up. The second flight was for golfers with a handicap over 20.
