Westport Runners Have Options This Weekend

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – There’s something old, something new and a lot of options for runners this weekend as the spring racing season hits high gear in Fairfield County.

There are road races in Wilton, Westport, Darien and Stamford. Some hard-core runners even may venture up to Lake Waramug in New Preston for the Jack Bristol Ultras, which includes three events up to 100 kilometers.

The most well-known race in the region this weekend is the 34th annual Minute Man 5K and 10K race that begins at Compo Beach in Westport Sunday at 8:30 a.m. The Daffodil Dash 5K in Wilton starts the busy weekend at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. On Sunday, the 5-mile YW Race Against Racism for Empowering Women will begin at 8 a.m. at Cherry Lawn Park in Darien. The race is sponsored by the YWCA of Darien/Norwalk. The race is a new event this year.

Also on Sunday is the 5K Time for Lyme Walk/Run at Cove Island in Stamford, which begins at 9 a.m.

The Minute Man Race had nearly 1,000 finishers between the two races last year. Noredine Abdelfateh of Norwalk won the men’s 5K, and Susan Gold of Fairfield won the women’s 5K. Westport’s Tom Harding won the men’s 10K, and Leslie Sporre of Norwalk won the women’s race. There also is a Kids Fun Run for children ages 3-12. The race is sponsored by the Westport Young Women’s League, and runners can register from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at The Edge Fitness Center in Norwalk. Race-day registration also is accepted.
