Barlow Boys Lacrosse Hammers Weston

WESTON, Conn. – The Joel Barlow High boys lacrosse team rolled over Weston High, 11-1, on the Trojans field Tuesday night, making a mockery of the close game expected from the rivals.

The Falcons surged ahead with a 4-0 first quarter, gave up their only goal early in the second and dominated the second half for an easy victory.

Compliments can be handed to a potent offense. But it was the defense that stole the show, led by Cooper Brown, a junior goalie for Barlow who recorded 17 saves and stifled the Trojans time and again.

“We came in fired up from the start. We really took care of them,” Brown said.

Barlow coach John Distler was pleased. “The defense did a great job with Cooper in the goal, and we stopped their key players," he said. "We played a man-to-man defense against their guys, and it worked well.”

Senior Nolan Stauffer led the Falcons attack with three goals, and senior Mike Matton had two. Junior Richie Miller scored Weston’s lone goal.

Barlow’s record climbs to 8-1. Its only loss came last Saturday against Wantagh, 13-11, on Long Island, N.Y. Weston drops to 7-3.

Weston coach John Mathews praised Barlow. “They controlled the face offs and a lot of possessions. They played well, shot well and give credit to their goalie.”

Despite the big loss, Mathews hopes to face the Falcons again in the South-West Conference championship or the state playoffs. Weston has found success in postseason play in recent years and looks forward to a better performance if it gets the chance.

Brown says the Falcons will persevere. “This team could go all the way,” he said. “We have the desire. We’re not going to lose.”
