Weston Is Second Wealthiest U.S. School District

WESTON, Conn. — Weston ranks as the second wealthiest school district in the United States, according to a report Wednesday from 24/7 Wall St.

The 10 wealthiest school districts are all in Fairfield County and Westchester County, N.Y., except for one in a suburb of Portland, Ore.

24/7 Wall St. analyzed census data from 2006-10 for each of the more than 10,000 unified school districts in the United States to compile its rankings.

Darien was ranked 10th and New Canaan was eighth. Only Scarsdale, N.Y., ranked higher than Weston.

The Weston school district has a median household income of $209,630 with 59.3 percent of households earning more than $200,000. Expenditures per student are $20,718, with 90 percent of funds coming through local taxes.

“Wealth appears to have an outsized effect on education at the local level. Residents that live in wealthy school districts have among the best schools in the nation based on graduation rates, test scores and independent ratings of academic success," 24/7 Wall St. said. "Children who attend these schools are more likely to earn a college degree than the national average.”

Weston High School was named the second best high school in the state and tops in Fairfield County by Newsweek’s The Daily Beast. It also ranked fourth in a state ranking by U.S. News & World Report.
