Board to Review School Raises

The Weston school board will meet in executive session Thursday at 7:30 p.m. to reconsider a recent decision to raise the salaries of several top school officials.

The meeting agenda posted in town hall Wednesday afternoon said it will concern employment contracts for the superintendent, assistant superintendent, director of finance and operations, facilities director and technology director.

The Board of Education spurred a public outcry when it announced raises of 7.5 percent for Superintendent Jerry Belair and 4 percent for Assistant Superintendent Tom Scarice and Director of Finance and Operations Jo-Anne Keating.

The Board of Selectman asked the school board to reconsider the hikes in light of the struggling economy. First Selectman Gayle Weinstein said the issue was not job performance but whether or not the town can afford the increases.

The school board met in executive session once before to review the matter, but left the raises unchanged.
