Driver Hurt In Merritt Crash On Westport/Norwalk Border

WESTPORT, Conn. – One person was sent to the hospital with minor injuries after his car drove off the Merritt Parkway between Norwalk and Westport Wednesday afternoon and struck a tree, Westport fire officials said.

The accident happened at approximately 4:10 p.m. between exits 40 and 41 northbound, Assistant Fire Chief John Plofkin Jr. said in a statement. When firefighters arrived, they saw a Nissan Sentra had driven down an embankment and struck a downed tree, causing the driver to become trapped, Plofkin said.

Westport and Norwalk firefighters, along with Norwalk EMS, worked together to free the driver and carry him up the the embankment,  Norwalk fire officials reported.

The driver was then taken to Norwalk Hospital by Norwalk EMS for evaluation, Plofkin said.

The accident scene was cleared at 4:45 p.m.
