The incident started with the downed power line on Bayberry Ridge Road at about 11:30 a.m.
When the first firefighters arrived, they found the line down and a brush fire extending toward a home on Bayberry Lane, forcing them to call for backup, fire officials said.
Strong winds and the terrain meant the fire was moving rapidly up a ridge toward more homes.
The Wilton and Weston fire departments arrived with extra manpower and water supply. Westport Engine 4 and Truck 1 headed for Bruce Lane to protect homes there that were also in the path of the fire, officials said.
The initial companies were able to extinguish the blaze, working on difficult terrain before it reached the top of the ridge. They used hand lines, rakes and backpack blowers to create a fire line and extinguishing stubborn hot spots, according to Assistant Fire Chief Brian Meadows.
Westport Police Department and Eversource assisted at the scene. Fairfield Fire Department provided station coverage during the incident, which was cleared shortly before 2 p.m.
