WESTON, Conn. When a tree fell and blocked the driveway of a Weston senior citizen last week, a volunteer request was sent to more than 200 residents who were signed up with the Weston Community Service Coalition.
"Within minutes, there were several responses. Someone went right over and cleared it," said coalition member Ken Edgar.
To celebrate its participants and introduce more Weston residents to volunteering opportunities in town, the coalition has put together a Volunteer Fair. It will be Sept. 10 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with more than 20 community service organizations in town represented.
"Most people are happy to volunteer but don't go seeking opportunities," said Edgar. "We're looking to connect volunteers with the people in need of services.
"The government can't do everything, particularly in this economic environment. We need to help each other. It's a poignant time for some of our families," he said. "There's a human instinct to help others, and volunteering satisfies that."
The fair will be held at the Norfield Church. Each organization will have a table and a representative to speak about volunteer opportunities. In conjunction with the Volunteer Fair, First Selectman Gayle Weinstein proclaimed Sept. 10 as Weston Volunteer Recognition Day. A video will be produced honoring Weston's volunteers and thanking them for their services to the town.
