WESTON, Conn. Should the Weston Police Department be able to keep two recently acquired military vehicles? That is the question facing the Police Commission, which is expected to make a decision during Tuesday nights meeting.
The 1992 and 1994 Humvees were picked up by the department under an agreement with the U.S. Law Enforcement Support Office, which leases used military vehicles to police agencies. The move angered First Selectman Gayle Weinstein, who said she should have been notified beforehand.
According to Police Chief John Troxell, the commission will discuss and decide whether to keep both vehicles, keep one vehicle or send both back to Fort Drum, N.Y, where they were picked up.
The vehicles, if retained, will be used in bad weather to safely move officers and their gear, according to Troxell. He also hopes to share the trucks with the Weston Fire Department and EMS during search and rescue situations in wooded areas.
The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. and will be held at Town Hall in the conference room, located at 56 Norfield Road. Members of the public are invited to attend the meeting and express their views on the Humvee acquisition.
