Weston Event To Help Parents Talk To Kids About Sex

WESTON, Conn. – Weston Youth Services will launch a new program this month on talking to your kids about touchy subjects. April’s theme starts with three of the big issues for parents of teens: “Sex, Drugs and Rock N’ Roll.”

“It’s natural to want to shield children from the harsh realities of the world, and feel uneasy discussing the facts (and especially the fatalities) of life,” Weston Youth Services Director Michelle Albright said in a press release. “However children need reliable information from responsible sources, and it’s crucial for families to find some common and comfortable ground to tackle the tough stuff.”

The program will bring in experts from around the area to hold discussions with parents on issues such as sex, alcohol, drugs, violence, divorce and death. Each month will have a different theme. After April’s talks on sex and drugs abuse, May will focus on parents’ jobs as role models, and June will work on the theme of “Camp, College and Coming of Age.”

For April’s first lecture on Thursday night, Westport psychologist Robert Selverstone will lead a lecture called, “Let's Talk about Sex: A Frank Discussion with Dr. Bob.” Selverstone is a former public school teacher, counselor and administrator who has also been featured in professional journals, educational videos and television programs.

Selverstone’s talk will help parents prepare to give their kids for discussions about sex. The lecture will cover all stages, from the initial talk about “the birds and the bees” to questions kids may have as they develop.

“Bring your partner or spouse to this evening event, and bring all the questions you always wanted to ask or were uncertain how to answer,” the press release reads.

Selverstone’s lecture runs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 4 at the Weston Public Library Community Room. For more information visit the Weston Youth Services website.
