Police Warn of DUI Checkpoint

Anyone thinking of drinking and driving should heed Lt. Donald Wakeman's warning: Wilton and Westport police are setting up a DUI checkpoint on Aug. 27 on Route 7. "It is a legal requirement to provide advance notice to the public of a DUI checkpoint," said the Wilton PD's Wakeman, adding that warning signs will be posted along the road.

The checkpoint will be conducted by both Wilton and Westport Police beginning in the evening and concluding sometime the next morning. The checkpoint is being conducted in conjunction with the State and National DUI enforcement program that is operating through Labor Day weekend.

Wakeman said it is standard procedure to only conduct a checkpoint for one night because the state needs to approve it and manpower is a factor because so many officers are needed to conduct one.
