No Liquor Shops in Easton, Try Redding on Sundays

EASTON, Conn. – Easton residents can’t buy liquor in town on any day of the week, so the new law that allows retail liquor, beer and wine sales on Sundays won’t have an impact.

“There are no package stores or grocery stores that sell beer in town, so the law doesn’t apply to Easton,” said Phillip Doremus, the town's zoning enforcement officer.

In fact, there are only a few retail establishments of any kind in Easton because zoning regulations established in 1941 prohibit the opening of a retail business. The few existing businesses opened before 1941, he said, and were allowed to remain after the law was passed. They are not permitted to expand, so they are unable to sell liquor in the future.

The town voted to allow liquor sales, he said, so Easton is not a dry town. The Connecticut Golf Club is the only establishment in town that sells liquor, he said.

Matthew Kipp, who works at the Easton Village Store, which doesn’t sell beer, said, “Legally we can’t sell liquor here. It’s been that way for decades, and it won’t change much.”

Easton residents seeking to purchase liquor on Sunday can go to Redding Wine & Spirits on Black Rock Turnpike in Redding, which plans to start Sunday sales on Memorial Day weekend. “We’ll try it out and see how it works,” said Chris Meyer, from Bethel, who works in the store.

“Everyone’s used to it and shops Saturdays for Sundays," he said. "It’s never been an issue for us. I don’t want to do it, but we’ll see what happens."
