First Corn of Season Heads to Farm

There’s nothing like eating fresh corn right off the cob, and Saturday, you can get it at Sport Hill Farm. The crop is the first sweet corn of the season from a farm in Shelton. It will be picked early in the day so it is fresh. It is grown using IPM (intergrated pest management), which relies on methods other than pesticides to keep vegetables bug-free.

Sweet apricots and golden sugar plums from an IPM orchard in New York will also be available. Sport Hill Farm owner Patti Popp says they are some of the most delicious fruits she has ever tasted.

Soon to come at the farm are home-grown escarole, carrots, beets, zucchini, summer squash, Swiss chard, kale, fresh garlic, broccoli and, later on, field tomatoes. Hydroponic heirloom cherry  tomatoes, fresh-baked “Flaxette” bread, salad dressings and marinades, and handmade feta cheese and Greek-style yogurt are other popular items now available at the farm.
