EASTON, Conn. Members of the Easton Animal Control just might get an early Christmas present after it was announced that the new shelter should be done before the holidays.
This should be wrapped up certainly before Christmas, and I am more confident now than I was when I heard that last Christmas, said First Selectman Thomas Herrmann.
The $529,000 project began in June 2010, and work was originally scheduled to be completed by Dec. 21, 2010. The new 12-run dog shelter is a much-needed improvement to the current 50-year-old, four-run dog shelter located at Westport and Sport Hill roads.
Power was finally brought into the building Friday, and now just punch items are left, according to project architect Mark Halstead. There is a lot of work to be done, but it can be done in the next two to three weeks. It can certainly be done by Christmas, he said.
Last month, members of the Animal Shelter Building Committee expressed concern with the project because several areas were open in the building, including a missing window in a back door, and the indoor/outdoor dog runs were still not closed off. Those problems have been addressed, and the project is moving forward, Halstead said Tuesday.
The linoleum flooring in an office area and hardware fixtures needed to be installed, he said, and the exterior needs to be cleaned up. But other than a few minor items, the project looks good.
We are so close to being done, Halstead said. And that is very gratifying.
