Driver Hospitalized After I-95 Crash in Fairfield

The driver of a Toyota Corolla was rushed to Bridgeport Hospital after her car collided with an 18-wheeler on Interstate 95 in Fairfield on Wednesday morning. Fairfield Fire Department crews needed to use the “jaws of life” to remove the woman from the car, which was pinned underneath the trailer of the truck.

An off-duty Westport police officer spotted the aftermath of the accident at the rest stop on the southbound side of the highway between exits 19 and 20. Assistant Fire Chief Doug Chavenello arrived at 11:09 a.m. Wednesday, with Car 3, Engines 2 and 4, and Ladders 1 and 2, with Cars 1 and 5 following soon after. The responders used extrication tools to remove the left side of the car and the driver’s seat to pull out the woman.

The driver was conscious and taken to Bridgeport Hospital for treatment with serious injuries. Connecticut State Police were investigating the cause of the accident. Department of Transportation cameras show that traffic is running smoothly on I-95.
