Community Garden Keeps Growing

Shelia Bergmann toiled under the sun last week, tending plants and preparing plots for the coming weekend.. The Westport Community Gardens will celebrate their "open garden" this Saturday, July 24, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Louis Weinberg, chairman of the Westport Community Gardens, said in a release that the gardens will have a ribbon cutting with First Selectman Gordon Joseloff at 10 a.m. that day. The public is invited to drop in.

Gardeners, ranging in age from three to 83, will talk show off their plots. The location has doubled in size, to an acre, in order to accommodate the growing membership. Weinberg said the group now has 100 gardeners, up from the original 30. Some of the participants will talk about techniques, pest control, fencing and a variety of other tips. Some plots are part of the "Grow a Row For the Hungry" program. All of the produce from those gardens goes to the Gillespie Center.
