Car Slides Into River, Driver OK

A car slid off Imperial Avenue in Westport Monday morning and into the shallow water of the Saugatuck River, according to the Westport Fire Department. The driver managed to get out of the car on her own before fire units responded around 8:20 a.m., Assistant Chief Robert Kepchar said in a release.

The driver lost control on a curve due to wet road conditions. Her car landed upright in a marshy area of the river. Firefighters and Westport EMS responders evaluated the driver, who refused hospital treatment.

Firefighters had to cut down a tree to remove the car. The vehicle did not leak fluids into the river and was removed by a tow truck.
