During this townwide litter cleanup, sponsored by the Westport Beautification Committee and Westport Parks and Recreation Department, residents are encouraged to hit the streets in and around their neighborhoods, picking up any trash they see, Parks and Recreation Director Stuart McCarthy said.
“People will be amazed how quickly they can fill a bag of garbage just by walking along their street,” McCarthy said.
In addition to individual residents, dozens of community organizations participate in the event. These groups, McCarthy said, are assigned to clean up adopted public spaces, such as athletic fields, parks, parking areas and highway exit/entrance ramps.
For residents, or a group of neighbors, interested in picking up litter beyond their own neighborhoods, there are several spots around town that have not adopted by participating civic organizations, McCarthy said. These include major intersections and stretches of road, such as the intersection of Compo Road South and Post Road E., the intersection of Greens Farms Road and the Sherwood Island Connector, and Greens Farms Road in general.
“These are great candidates for a cleaning up,” McCarthy said.
Residents or non-civic groups interested in cleaning up public spaces outside their own neighborhood should call the Parks and Recreation Office at 203-341-0501 before Saturday and specify the location they wish to work and at what time. If a location is already accounted for, another will be recommended, McCarthy said.
Free trash bags will be available at Jesup Green from 9 to 11 a.m. for people cleaning up large public spaces and adopted spots. Also, the town will collect bagged garbage from adopted spots and large public spaces — but not from personal homes, McCarthy said.
