From now through Nov. 18, the Conservative Synagogue of Westport, Weston and Wilton is taking orders for apple, pumpkin and pecan pies through its annual Share the Pie fundraiser, which benefits Homes With Hope —  a Westport-based nonprofit that helps the homeless.

“This is great fundraiser,” said Jeff Wieser, Homes With Hope president and chief executive officer. “Not only can you help raise money for people in need, you get something out of it. It just makes a lot of sense.”

Through the fundraiser, individuals can buy a pie for themselves, or buy one to be donated, Share the Pie Co-Chair Michelle Saunders said. Pies ordered for donation, along with any extra pies, are distributed to local homeless shelters and nonprofits, Saunders said.

Area companies are also encouraged to place orders, Saunders said. Corporate orders of 10 or more pies will be delivered upon request to businesses, she said.

“This is a nice way companies can honor their employees,” she said.

In addition to ordering pies, people can make a monetary donation.

The pies, all of which are kosher, are $20 each. A majority of the proceeds are donated to Homes With Hope, said Saunders. The remainder of the proceeds are used to support the synagogue’s social action efforts throughout the year, she said. Last year, for example, the synagogue used some of the money to fund its Mitzvah Day activities, which benefited the Connecticut Food Bank, the Norwalk Emergency Center, Prospect House, Hollander House and several other organizations.

The money donated to Homes With Hope goes into the nonprofit’s general operations fund, Wieser said, which supports the organization’s many programs and services.

“We operate the Gillespie Center, a community kitchen, the food pantry, Hoskins Place, the Bacharach Community and supportive housing,” Wieser said. “Money in our general fund supports all of that.”

Fairway Market and ZuckerBakers in Long Island will once again be providing the pies, Saunders said.

Pies will be available for pick-up on Nov. 26 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the synagogue, 30 Hillspoint Road, Westport.

Pie orders can be placed online, over the phone by calling 203-454-4673 or by mail. For more information, visit the Share the Pie website or contact Michelle Saunders at geckomom@optonline.net.
