Treasures Unearthed at Tag Sale

Buried beneath the 50-cent garlic press and a $2 woven basket at the Easton Senior Center tag sale may be a treasure perfect for you, volunteers Karen Casarin and Jackie Reck say. "They're looking for little things that they might see the value in that someone else might not," Reck says of those who have come to the sale, which began Monday and goes until 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

"I think a lot of people just like to explore—they like going through things. We find things everyday that we have not seen before," she added as a woman handed over a few bucks for a wolf poster for her daughter.

Casarin, who is in charge of the sale, said the senior center hosts two to three tag sales and a clothing sale each year. All the items are donated from Eastonites and people from surrounding towns such as Stratford, Trumbull, Milford, Monroe, Weston, Wilton and Norwalk who use the center.

By the middle of the second day, the earnings had reached about $2,000. "We're self-sufficient," Casarin says of the center. "What we make is what goes to support all the programs."

Senior Center Director Val Buckley said about 50 volunteers helped set up the piles of items with assistance from volunteers from Joel Barlow High School, Laurelton Hall, Fairfield Prep, St. Joseph's and other private schools in Greenwich and Norwalk. "It's all set up by students—it's fantastic," Buckley says.
