Indiana, Here She Comes

Francesca Laborie wanted to get away and be somewhere different, but admits she was apprehensive the first time she visited Indiana University. Now she's so excited about being there she's already reading for her classes and has picked out a comforter.

"I was a little scared at first because, driving in, it's just all corn fields, which really threw me off," said Francesca, who will study fashion merchandising and business. But her fears were calmed after she attended orientation and met her roommate, who's from Indiana, on Facebook.

After the initial culture shock, Francesca says she was impressed by how friendly everyone was, by the campus and by the intense school spirit. She will be attending IU with fellow Weston High alums Lindsay Hakes, Ilana Katz and Catherine Roberts.

"We all kind of feel the same way -- there was not too much school spirit in Weston at all, and there was no emphasis on sports," she said. "Once you get [to Indiana], they're so proud of their school and you feel it from the moment you get there, and that really was a big thing for all of us."

Her quest to see the world will not stop in Indiana. She hopes to study in Florence in her junior year, and will take Italian the first semester at Indiaja so she knows the language when she goes.

"I'm ready for the change," Francesca says. "I wanted to go far, I want to see different parts of the world."
