WESTPORT, CONN. -- There’s a reason to be freezin’ this season, say sponsors of the annual TI (Temple Israel) Polar Bear Plunge in Westport.

Intrepid souls are invited to brave the frigid waters of Long Island Sound on New Year’s Day (Friday, Jan. 1) in a fundraising -- if not goosebump-raising -- event benefiting the MS Society’s Connecticut Chapter.

Splashdown starts at Compo Beach at 11 a.m., according to the Polar Bears’ website. The state park is located at 60 Compo Beach Road.

Those wishing to warm up after the big dip can repair to Johnny Utah’s in South Norwalk for drinks, food, and bull riding. Tickets to the brunch are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

The restaurant is located at 80 Washington St.

The MS Society’s mission is to raise funds for research that will lead to better treatments and, hopefully, a cure for people with multiple sclerosis, a lifelong and often debilitating disease.

The Connecticut Chapter provides services for more than 6,500 state residents, according to its website.
