'Oliver' Highlights Weston's Weekend

WESTON, Conn. – Hey Weston, are you looking for something to do this weekend that doesn’t involve the Super Bowl? How about story time at the library, a Rubiks Cube lesson or taking in a production of “Oliver!” They are just some the events happening throughout Fairfield County this weekend:

Friday, Feb. 3 

8 p.m.: Canadian actor Charlie Ross plays 40 characters, compressing the original "Star Wars Trilogy" to 60 minutes. Tickets are available through the Quick Center Box Office at Fairfield University. Call 203-254-4010, or toll-free 1-877-ARTS-396 (1-877-278-7396). Tickets can also be purchased online at www.quickcenter.com. Ross' performance will be followed by a high-definition screening of "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," the 2008 animated feature about the adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker. 

Saturday, Feb. 4

11 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Take Your Child to the Library Day – Introduce your child to the Easton Public Library! Drop in Story Times will be held at 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Drop in arts and crafts will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon and from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tours of the Children’s Department will be given at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. There will be refreshments and raffle prizes too! Registration is not required.

1 p.m.: Puzzle aficionados can test their skill at the Westport Library's Crossword Puzzle Contest at 1 p.m. Will Shortz, The New York Times' crossword puzzle editor, is the host in this friendly contest. Tickets are $16. Register online at www.westportlibrary.org/.

2 p.m.: The classic Broadway musical "Oliver!” takes over the Ridgefield Playhouse's stage Saturday, Feb. 4, at 2 and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. The shows are produced by Sabrina's Encore Productions, a theater studio in Newtown that provides an outlet for students to grow as performers in high-caliber shows that feature singing, acting, dancing and set design. "Oliver!" is based on Charles Dickens' novel that was made into an Oscar-winning film in 1968. Tickets are $20 and $25. For more information, visit the Playhouse's event page.

Sunday, Feb. 5

Noon to 4 p.m.: FeralCare will host an event to draw attention to cats in need of a home at Fairfield's new Petco store on Grasmere Avenue. 1 to 2:30 p.m.: Get a crash course on Rubik's Cubes with your kids at Fairfield’s Hobbytown USA on the Post Road. Scott Trueblood, a local Rubik's expert, will give a four-week course on the logic behind the puzzle. The class is free, but space is limited. Reserve a spot by calling 203-256-0773.
