EASTON, Conn. When President Abraham Lincoln called for 300,000 more troops to step up during the Civil War, 1,000 men from the Easton region answered his call. Their stories will be the topic of a free lecture on Thursday evening by the Historical Society of Easton.
Stories and Tales, Connecticuts 17th Volunteer Infantry will be the topic of Edmund Schmidts lecture. He is currently the chairman of the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation and the former president of the Darien Historical Society. Schmidt will discuss the history of the infantry, its role in the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, and its capture and imprisonment in the South.
