Afraid Of Alexa? Maker Faire Westport To Teach Secrets Of Voice Interaction

WESTPORT, Conn. – For the first time in Westport, a nonprofit promoting innovation and creativity in education will be offering a family-friendly workshop focusing on how to use the human voice to interact with a computer.

The Amazon Echo and it's voice service, Alexa, have become commonplace in many homes across the country.

Remarkable STEAM, a nonprofit that supports groundbreaking efforts in the areas of science, technology, engineering, arts and math, is working with the Westport Library to put on the Maker Faire Westport, a showcase of “invention, creativity and resourcefulness and a celebration of the Maker Movement.”

"Makers," according to organizers, are people ranging from “tech enthusiasts to crafters, to homesteaders, to scientists and garage tinkerers.”

Among the workshops scheduled for the April 23 event is the Amazon Alexa Skills Building Boot Camp, according to the organizers, who said the class will focus on the voice service that powers the Amazon Echo.

“Being able to interact with a computer with my voice is hard to comprehend; I still find it hard to believe,” said Mark Mathias, founder and co-chair of Maker Faire Westport and president of Remarkable STEAM. “Yet people now do it every day. It’s hard to believe this was not possible just a few years ago and we’re only starting to see what this technology can do.”

The first Amazon Alexa session is scheduled for 1-3 p.m. on April 23, according to organizers. A second session is set for 3-5 p.m. that afternoon. Both session are free and require pre-registration.

The Maker Faire Westport is to be held at Jesup Green & The Westport Library, 20 Jesup Road, Westport.
