Redding Board Of Education Budget Lowered To $21 Million

REDDING, Conn. -- It's back to the adding machines for the Redding Board of Education following a March 28 vote by the the Board of Finance to demand they come up with a budget $225,000 less than last year, according to the Redding Pilot.

The Board of Education will need to make cuts to come in with a budget of $21 million for the 2016-17 school year, according to the Redding Pilot. Board of Finance members pointed to high per-pupil costs as one reason for voting for the cuts, said the Redding Pilot.

In response, dismayed school administrators said the costs are misleading due to the district's large number of late-career teachers who earn more than newer teachers, reported the Redding Pilot. Superintendent Thomas McMorran told Board of Finance members that asking for more cuts would cause a loss in programming and faculty, according to the Redding Pilot. The current cuts will result in loss of support personnel, added the Redding Pilot.
