Assets Survey Aims To Connect Easton/Redding Students, Community Leaders

EASTON/REDDING, Conn. -- A task force representing schools, organizations, and businesses in Easton and Redding is conducting of survey of the two towns’ natural assets – their people.

CAN, or Community Assets Network, which operates under the umbrella of the Easton/Redding/Region 9 school district, says its initiative’s primary purpose is to identify personal and professional resources and to create a “map” that can be used by local students, and other community members, to “connect professionally and collaboratively.”

Students – most specifically at the Joel Barlow High School, which the school districts share – can then use the “map” to not only become more aware of their community, but to establish valuable contacts. It may also lead, the task force said, to more opportunities for career speakers, mentors and advisers, volunteer sites, internships,and job-shadowing experiences.

In time, the task force said, students may use their connections to be of service to local organizations, businesses and professionals.

Among the information that the survey seeks are: the organization or business survey takers represent, what “career clusters” best fit their field, and whether they would be willing to be a speaker at a Career Day, participate in a job fair, or act as a mentor to a high school student.

The task force consists of school officials, and representatives of local businesses, libraries, and community media outlets.
