Herbst, who is also planning on running for governor next year, announced that he received the diagnosis during a routine checkup, the Hartford Courant reported. He said that he has monitored his thyroid for the past several years due to a family history of thyroid cancer, and that his father was diagnosed with it at age 25 and made a full recovery, according to the Hartford Courant.
Herbst said he plans on having the thyroid removed, which should allow him to recover without the need for radiation or chemotherapy, according to the Hartford Courant. He plans on going in for surgery on a Friday and being back to work the following Monday, the Hartford Courant reported. The recovery and treatment rate is very high, he said.
Herbst continues to raise funds for a possible gubernatorial run, and has so far raised more than $80,000 for his campaign, the Hartford Courant reported.
