MONROE, Conn. -- Monroe First Selectman Steve Vavrek announced Tuesday that he will not seek re-election this year.
Vavrek has served as first selectman since he was first elected in 2009. He said in a Facebook post that he came to his decision after reflecting on the fact that this upcoming fall will mark the 30th anniversary of when he and his wife Teri moved to Monroe, and that for 28 of those year he has been involved in the town politically.
"Over the past 28 years, much has changed. In our town, in our region, in our state, in our country and in our world, fresh new ideas are being developed and must be listened to. While we should admit that there is much to learn from the past, new eyes and fresh, bold new ideas are needed to move us all with the times," Vavkek said.
"Saying this, I have decided that I will not seek re-election as your first selectman in 2017. For 28 years, Teri and my family have been by my side during this marvelous era in our life. My friends and community partners have made these years very enjoyable as well. Monroe has always been a great town, and I am confident that we will continue to grow as a community."
Vavrek began his career in town service as an appointed official on the Parks and Recreation Commission. He was active on the Monroe Republican Town Committee and was elected to the Town Council in 1993. After a couple terms he was elected to the Board of Finance for a couple terms, and then returned to the Town Council before running for first selectman in 2009.
He has also been active in a number of community organizations, serving as a member of the Monroe Rotary Club, past president and regional director of the Monroe Jaycees. He was a coach and regional commissioner for the American Youth Soccer Organization, coach and first ever coaching director for the Monroe Soccer Club, a moderator at Stepney Baptist Church and the co-volunteer coordinator of the Kids Kreation playground at Wolfe Park in the 90s.
