Vavrek’s $85.4 million plan -- representing a 1.69 percent spending increase and a 3.21 percent hike in property taxes – earmarks 64 percent, or $54.8 million, for the school system, MonroeCourierNews.com’s story said.

School officials told the board that they worked hard to keep costs down and are cutting several teaching and staff positions, MonroeCourierNews.com reported.

Differences may arise during budget discussions, but the democratic process should remain intact, Vavrek told the board, according to MonroeCourierNews.com’s report.
