Shaban is the ranking member of the legislature's Environment Committee and represents Easton, Weston and Redding.
The conference was Jan. 8 and was hosted by U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Connecticut Energy and Environmental Protection Commissioner Robert Klee.
The purpose of the conference was to discuss the Paris Agreement and how Connecticut will work to address related emissions requirements and coastal planning strategies.
If ratified by a plurality of the participating countries, the agreement ostensibly would create a legally binding global effort to address climate change by, among other things, requiring developed and developing countries to reduce their CO2 emissions to agreed-upon levels, with the goal of limiting global temperature increases to less than 2° Celsius. Regular reviews will be conducted to monitor the efforts made to fulfill this commitment.
"It is important to know how our international commitments will impact our state and this nation," Shaban stated. "The discussion was informative, and touched upon important questions like whether or not to focus solely on CO2 emissions, how to include methane in the plan, and what changes in statewide energy production are being made to reduce certain emissions."
Shaban added that, "while the level and impact of anthropogenic greenhouse gases continues to be examined, mostly everyone can agree that moving toward renewable and distributed energy sources is a positive step for the environment, state and national security, and local economies."
