Dunsby, a Republican, plans to run for the seat in the 135th House District currently held by state Rep. John Shaban, who is not running for re-election this fall.
The 135th District includes Easton, Weston and parts of Redding. Shaban plans to seek the Republican nomination to run for the U.S. House seat in the 4th Congressional District, challenging incumbent Jim Himes.
Dunsby announced he has filed the paperwork to become a candidate.
“My objective is to make Connecticut prosper. We need to transform Connecticut into a state where both workers and businesses want to be,” Dunsby said in a statement. “The first steps are to restore fiscal order and to keep control as local as possible.”
Dunsby was elected first selectman of Easton in 2013, and was re-elected in 2015. He said he will continue to serve as the town's first selectman, a part-time position, if elected to the legislature.
As first selectman, Dunsby said he has helped to maintain Easton’s strong financial position — including preserving its AAA rating; and overseen a solar array installation that provides over 15 percent of Easton’s municipal electricity needs at a lower price.
He has been active in local public service since moving to Easton in 2002. Dunsby was a member of Easton’s Conservation Commission from 2003 to 2009, the final two years as its chairman. He then served as an elected member of the Easton Board of Education from 2009 to 2013, the final year as its chairman.
Previously, he was a founding partner of SummerHaven Investment Management, a Stamford-based investment firm. He has published a book, papers, and articles in the field of investing, and in 2009 was an adjunct professor of finance at Fairfield University.
Born and raised in New Jersey, Dunsby attended public schools until entering the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, graduating summa cum laude. He also holds a doctorate in finance from Wharton.
He and his wife, Cathy, are the parents of four children ranging in age from 8 to 17.
Dunsby is the only announced major candidate so far in the 135th District, but Bonnie Troy of Weston is the Green Party of Connecticut has thrown her hat into the ring, according to the Weston Forum.
