K9 Cyrus, an 8-year-old German shepherd, passed away unexpectedly earlier this month, leaving Officer RJ Carlson without his canine partner of seven years.
Cyrus most recently had used his top-notch sniffing abilities to nab suspected heroin dealers in a Bridgeport drug bust, police said.
After hearing of Cyrus’ death, the Mobile Veterinary Clinic started a fundraising effort to help the police department buy and train a new K9 for Carlson.
According to Maureen Reid, the clinic’s practice manager, this could cost $13,000 to $15,000.
The next scheduled training classes for police dogs starts in September, Reid said, so time is of the essence.
“It is with deep sadness that the Trumbull Police Department announces that K9 Cyrus has passed away unexpectedly. In his career, he has assisted in making numerous felony arrests, locating missing persons and assisting with numerous drug arrests, including (a) large heroin seizure," said a message on the police department’s Facebook page.
Cyrus was, the post said, “a great partner to Officer RJ Carlson and a beloved member of both the Carlson family and the Trumbull Police Department family. He will be greatly missed.”
Reid said donations can be sent to the clinic at 165 Monroe Turnpike, Trumbull, CT 06611.
Checks should be made out to the Trumbull Police Department with “Donation for police K9” written in the memo line, Reid said.
