The incident happened at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday as a Trumbull Police Officer was flagged down in the mall parking lot.
The woman, who had already injured the 19-year-old man and threatened to kill him, threw a knife away as the officer approached, police said.
The suspect, identified as Hayley Nicole Welcome of 160 Glenview Terrace, New Haven, had gone to the mall, where her former boyfriend works, police said.
The ex-boyfriend agreed to retrieve an item belonging to her out of his car, police said. Welcome then became angry about their breakup and attacked him, punching him in the face, ripping a chain off his neck and then pulling a knife out, threatening to kill him, police said.
The two struggled over the knife during the assault in the parking lot, police said.
As the officer approached, Welcome was screaming at the victim, police said.
Another bystander yelled, “She has a knife,” police said.
The victim told the officer that she “threw it,” and the officer took Welcome into custody without incident, police said.
The victim pointed out the nearby knife that Welcome had thrown, and it was recovered, police said.
He sustained scratches to several areas of his body but declined medical attention, police said.
Welcome was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon, third-degree assault, second-degree threatening and breach of peace. She was held on $10,000 bond for a court date of April 12.
