Police: Car Thieves Enter Trumbull Home, Take Purse, Use Stolen Credit Card

TRUMBULL, Conn. — Three young men in a stolen car went into a Trumbull woman's home through an unlocked door last week and stole a handbag containing credit cards that they later used, according to police.

The resident of the Garden Street home heard a side door of her home open and close at around 7 a.m. on Tuesday, April 4. She thought it was a family member, but when she went to check, she saw an SUV and a four-door sedan driving away. A short time later, she received notifications from her credit card company that one of her cards had been used several times, according to police.

The woman then checked and realized her purse had been stolen. The cards were used to make fraudulent purchases in several stores in Stratford and Farmington, police said.

Trumbull Police were able to retrieve video surveillance from several businesses, which revealed three suspects using the woman's card. They were seen leaving a store in the same SUV and sedan, police said. The SUV was determined to have been stolen from a driveway in Easton earlier that morning, where it had been left unlocked with the keys inside.

Police said that there have been numerous overnight burglaries and thefts of vehicles throughout the state recently, and that this one appears to be linked to similar incidents where suspects travel to a neighborhood and take advantage of unlocked cars and keys left inside.

Police are reminding residents not to leave keys in parked cars, to lock their homes and vehicles, and to report any suspicious persons or activities to the Trumbull Police Department at (203) 261-3665 or 911.
