Redding Historical Society President Joe Bonomo came up with the idea and said that items in Redding's favor include the town begin a big player during the Revolutionary War, when troops posted in Redding helped defend New England, and Putnam State Park was also the site of a winter encampment often referred to as the “Valley Forge of Connecticut," said the News-Times.
To help in the town's effort, U.S. Rep. James Himes and U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy have written to the Secretary of the Navy in support of the having a ship named after Redding, the News-Times reported. Unfortunately, there are only two types of ships or boats that are named after smaller towns and counties and there are only three of them being built this year, added the News-Times.
