Sheri Goldberg, organizer of the petition, says that while pet stores look cute and tempt shoppers to find homes for the animals, the treatment of the dogs is substandard and often leads to poor health.
"It is nothing short of a slum for these poor dogs and is not the kind of place we want opening in our mall," Goldberg said in her petition mission statement.
American Dog Club's website states its dogs come from "only the best private professional certified USDA licensed breeders and facilities, especially those that specialize in a particular breed or size." The site also says American Dog Club does not support puppy mills, hobby or backyard breeders.
A petition to shutter the American Dog Club location in the Smith Haven Mall in Long Island due to poor conditions has amassed over 7,300 signatures.
The business also has two complaints filed against it with the Better Business Bureau in the last year.
