The blessing ceremony will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19. The pubic is invited to attend. The Monroe Town Green is located at the corner of Fan Hill Road and Route 111 in the center of town.
It is the first creche on the Town Green in recent memory, said Kevin Donovan, of the St. John XXIII Council 5987, who has lived in Monroe for over 25 years.
The Knights of Columbus had to get permission from First Selectman Steve Vavrek to place the creche on the Monroe Town Green. they filled out the necessary forms and insurance guarantees.
St. Jude Roman Catholic Church in Monroe also has two creches set up — one in front of the church and the other by the rectory.
"This creche was bought specifically by the Council for the Green, along with a sign stating that it is owed, erected and maintained by the council and not the town," Donovan said.
A creche, or a nativity scene, includes sculptures representing the scene of the birth of Jesus. Nativity scenes include the baby Jesus, his mother Mary, and Joseph. Other characters from the nativity story, such as shepherds and sheep as well as angels, are also included along with the three wisemen, or Magi.
The creche in Monroe is similar to one purchased by the St. Teresa Council of the Knights of Columbus in Trumbull for the Christ the King Parish.
