Shadowing a pair of town police officers for two hours Wednesday, they learned how to fingerprint and visited the evidence room — and dispelled a few misconceptions along the way.
“There are so many jobs there other than just driving around in a Crown Vic giving out tickets,” said Granata.
“Yeah, they’re not just sittin’ around eating doughnuts!” said Holmes.
Eighteen members of town Boy Scout, Girl Scout and Cub Scout troops applied to be part of the day, a Trumbull tradition for nearly 50 years, said Carol Jayne, co-chair of the Scouts in Government Committee. Each child had to write an essay explaining why he or she wanted to participate in the annual event, which was started by former First Selectman Clarence Heimann.
“This is a privilege, an earned privilege,” Jayne said.
While following an animal control officer or the town videographer were some of the most popular choices, children told current First Selectman Timothy Herbst that there was something to be learned all across the town — from the fire chief, a children’s librarian, the golf course property director, a 911 dispatcher and more.
Herbst presented each scout with a certificate and had each one come to the front of the council chambers to explain at least one thing they learned from the visit.
The first selectman also thanked town employees for taking time out from their busy schedules to open children’s eyes to the many opportunities in town government.
“It teaches our youth about how town government works,” he said.
