There also were demonstrations and presentations about various aspects of local and national history, as well as a report on renovations of the three historical society buildings, at the Edith Wheeler Memorial Library meeting, officials said.
Vic Casaretti was re-elected to a one-year term as president. Also re-elected for one-year terms were Vida Stone, vice president, Cindy Robertson, secretary, Deb Heim, treasurer and board members Nancy Zorena, Kathy Balleta, Karen Cardi, Paul Lesko, Cynthia Giancaspro and Marven Moss.
Casaretti reported contractors are preparing to start work on the third building owned by the historical society. Work is completed on the other two buildings, officials said.
Also at the meeting, Monroe volunteer firefighter George Lattanzi displayed a collection of artifacts he and his son Jake uncovered with a metal detector in the Stevenson district. Old coins, indian beads and pottery are part of the cache, considered to be possibly the most significant find since the society was established in 1959, officials said.
John Babina, founder of radio station WMNR, gave a demonstration of crank-operated telephones from yesteryear.
Kevin Daly delivered a PowerPoint presentation, relating little-known episodes of Monroe’s past-, such as a murder trial, a Ku Klux Klan rally and a forced landing by a former Connecticut governor in a biplane.
