Trumbull had said it would not pay for the flags, but the town reversed its decision and will supply $200 to purchase the flags. That change of heart came after the Trumbull Historical Society asked the public for help and began to receive donations to cover the costs.
"We can't thank the community enough for coming together in an effort to honor those who fought for our country. We were notified this morning that the town will provide for the flags, as they have in the past," a statement from the historical society said Monday."In addition, we received several donations, and Eve Storry from the VFW collected $200 on our behalf. A memorial fund will be established with these contributions. Thank you to all who donated!"
The Trumbull Historical Society keeps alive a nearly century-old tradition of placing flags for Memorial Day on the graves of Trumbull veterans of the French and Indian War, Revolutionary War, and Civil War. The practice was started nearly 100 years ago by Arthur Plumb, and the tradition was continued by his daughter, Helen Plumb, a Trumbull town clerk for 44 years.
Dedicated volunteers associated with the Trumbull Historical Society have carried on this town tradition for Memorial Day.
The Town of Trumbull has paid for the flags in past years, but last week had said it could afford the $200 for the flags. The announcement Monday reverses that decision.
