The speaker will be bariatric surgeon Saber Ghiassi, M.D. If you’re 60 pounds or more overweight and concerned about developing obesity-related conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and gastric reflux, you may be a candidate for weight loss surgery.

Known as bariatric surgery, there are three standard options to consider: a gastric bypass, which bypasses a portion of the stomach and re-routes food to the intestines; adjustable gastric banding, which adjusts the size of the stomach to restrict food intake; and a sleeve gastrectomy in which a portion of the stomach is surgically removed.

Each procedure carries risks but also offers those who have struggled with morbid obesity the opportunity to make behavior and lifestyle changes while losing a significant amount of weight.

In these free educational seminars, surgeons from the Yale Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery Program at Bridgeport Hospital discuss the criteria needed to qualify for surgery, the pros and cons of each procedure, the long-term health benefits and the post-operative counseling and support available from the bariatric team.

The information sessions will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. To register for a seminar, call 203-789-6237.

The Fairfield County Medical Center is located at 112 Quarry Road, Trumbull.
