Hampden County resident Kornstatin Gladysh, age 24, of Westfield, was arrested on Tuesday, Dec. 21 after East Longmeadow Police responded to a report of a crash.
According to police, when officers responded to Pleasant Street for the crash, they noticed a man walking away from the scene.
Officer Anthony Dieni recognized the man as Gladysh, the same person who had been arrested by the department on the previous day for alleged unarmed burglary and possession of a Class E substance, and stopped him to check on his well-being, police said.
Officers at the crash site said it appeared the vehicle had driven up and over another vehicle that was parked on the street, indicative to them that the moving vehicle had been operating at a very high speed.
Gladysh denied being involved in the crash, saying that he had been walking from the area of the Rotary where a friend had dropped him off, police said.
But when he could not provide the name of the friend who dropped him off, he also said that he had not heard any vehicle crashing nearby as he walked on Pleasant Street.
An investigation indicated that Gladysh matched the physical description of the person the witness saw walking away from the crash, police said.
The vehicle that crashed had been reported stolen out of Westfield approximately one hour earlier.
Gladysh was arrested and charged with:
- Leaving the scene of a property damage accident
- Negligent operation of a motor vehicle
- Receiving a stolen vehicle
- Speeding
