Rain Couldn't Dampen Spirits At Stratford's Holiday Lighting Festival

STRATFORD, Conn. — The weather outside was frightful, but a hardy band of holiday hopefuls brought the annual Holiday Lighting Festival inside Town Hall on Tuesday evening, making merry despite the storm.

“It’s a great time of year,” said Mayor John Harkins after he flipped an oversized switch on the holiday lights and “Seasons Greetings” sign that graced Town Hall’s front facade. “It’s nice to get everyone together for the Christmas and holiday season.”

Members of the Wilcoxson School Choir treated the crowd to lively renditions of “Jingle Bells” and “Up On The Housetop” before joining other children gathered at the windows for a glimpse of Santa and Mrs. Claus, who arrived via firetruck to pose for photos with pint-sized fans.

After the lights came on outside, the Stratford High School Select Choir sang “Here We Come A-Caroling” and “Carol of the Bells,” among many other favorites, while neighbors chatted over doughnuts and mulled cider.

Honey Bear Learning Center offered holiday arts and crafts for little ones.

Earlier in the afternoon, the Stratford Public Library held a family show and holiday celebration with magician Debbie O’Carroll strolling through the stacks to wow library goers with her sleight of hand.

Sponsors for the annual festival were People’s Savings Bank, Donut Inc., Honey Bear Learning Center and Mogelof Dental Group.

Harkins said he would have loved to have the lighting outdoors, but Mother Nature simply didn’t cooperate.

“It wouldn’t be fair to the children or the parents,” he said.
