STAMFORD, Conn. Junior Cordeiro scored twice, including a highlight reel fake-out past a Darien defender in the second half, as the Westhill boys' soccer team blanked the Blue Wave, 3-0, Thursday.
Still, head coach Joe Andrews was not that thrilled with his teams victory, saying his players need to work more as a team if they hope to contend this season.
We got lucky. [Darien] hit the post twice. I've been around this game long enough to know that 2-0 or even 3-0 isn't safe, Andrews said. Its a whole new group of guys with only three returning guys. Its a work in progress, but theyre a fun group to work with.
Darien seemed to be on the attack the entire second half and Andrews added that if one of those breaks went the other way, his team could have blown a huge lead. Westhills defense used all of its skill and a little luck to fend off seven Darien shots on goal and five corner kicks in the second half.
Luck was on Westhills side on offense early on as well. A muffed kick by Jacque Baudoin that should have been harmless trickled through the Darien keepers fingers for a Westhill score just seven minutes into the match.
It then became the Junior Cordeiro show on offense as the talent of the Westhill captain became apparent. He blasted a free kick past Dariens goalie to put Westhill up 2-0.
Early in the second half, Cordeiro executed what could end up being one of the plays of the year. Deep in the corner of Darien territory, Cordeiro looked like he was walking a tightrope along the goal line, then nearly faked a Darien defender out of his shoes as he slammed home the Vikings third goal of the day.
Despite the display of impressive footwork, Andrews said it was not the play Cordeiro should have made.
Junior got a little selfish in the second half and he knew it, Andrews said. We want him to be involved as much as possible, but I told him its not always going to be with the ball. It's something he's working on.
Westhill (2-0) has now outscored opponents 5-0 on the young season. The Vikings travel to Trinity Catholic for a 4 p.m. Wednesday game.
