STAMFORD, Conn. -- Stamford will serve up a connection to the upcoming Summer Olympics next month in Rio de Janeiro.

Radek Szymanik, a Stamford resident and a tennis coach at Chelsea Piers Connecticut in Stamford, will coach the Poland national team. Szymanik has been the coach of Poland’s Davis Cup team since 2007 and coached the Olympic team in London in 2012.

Szymanik started playing tennis at age 2 and won regional and national tournaments in Poland in singles, doubles and team events. He was a two-time winner in team competition at Poland’s national championships.

He has worked with the Polish Tennis Association since 2002. Under his guidance, Jerzy Janowicz reached the semifinals at Wimbledon in 2013, and he coached the finalists of a U.S. Open doubles team in 2011.

"The Olympic Games is the most prestigious sporting event one could ever hope to participate in,” Szymanik said. “I am very excited to represent Poland and Chelsea Piers Connecticut in the 2016 Summer Games and look forward to taking what I learn from this experience and using it to better the coaching staff and the adult and youth tennis programs.”

Szymanik is also on the staff at the Long Ridge Swim and Tennis Club in Stamford. Gigi Fernandez, senior tennis consultant at Chelsea Piers and formerly ranked No. 1 player in the world, is also the director of tennis at Long Ridge.

The Summer Olympics begin Aug. 5 and the first tennis match will be played on Aug. 6. The gold medal matches in men's, women's and doubles will be played on Sunday, Aug. 14.
