Stamford Native Retires After 32 Years As L.A. Lakers' Trainer

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Head athletic trainer Gary Vitti is retiring after 32 seasons and eight championships with the Los Angeles Lakers, according to

The Lakers honored Vitti with a video tribute and custom gift between the first and second quarters at their April 3 game against the Boston Celtics, reported.

The Stamford native and 1972 graduate of Stamford Catholic High School received a standing ovation from the sold-out Staples Center crowd, said

According to Lakers Nation, star Kobe Bryant also honored Vitti with a photograph of the two inscribed with the following message:

“To Gary, You are the best! Thank you for always having my back and showing me how to act like a pro! I love you and appreciate you more than you will ever know.”

Bryant also retired this season.

As head athletic trainer, Vitti worked to prevent, manage and treat injuries for Bryant and his teammates.
